This story is about a clever Golden Retriever named Jackson who was rescued by Steve Moore from a shelter. Despite any opinions from animal lovers, Jackson’s intelligence is evident. Steve Moore adopted Jackson and dedicated himself to training him on a daily basis.
Moore trained Jackson to do something amazing in just a month. Passersby who previously showed no interest in Jackson was now impressed by his “trick” and wanted to have him for themselves. Moore brought Jackson to crowded and noisy locations to train him to work in such environments. He made Jackson practice sitting and staying in place, gradually increasing the duration of the stay. Eventually, Moore had him practice sit-and-stay while he moved away from him.

He repeatedly practiced leaving Jackson alone in a safe and secure place while he went into stores to complete his errands. This was a better option than leaving Jackson in a car, where he could overheat since dogs are typically not allowed in most stores. Leaving Jackson untethered provided him the freedom to run to safety in case of an emergency situation.

In the last step, I trained Jackson to sit and stay while wearing a sign around his neck that says “Dad told me to wait here. Me waiting.” Despite the commotion around him and people approaching him to say hello and pet him, Jackson waits patiently for his human to come back.
